Counseling And Domestic Assault Casses

Anger management and couples’ counseling are often ordered by the court as part of the accused’s sentence. The individual is responsible to obtain and pay for this counseling.

I often tell my clients, guilty or not guilty, to go and get some sort of help. They need a third party to listen to their side of the story. They will be feeling very alone; family and friends have taken sides and they need someone to listen to their issues and problems.

It’s clear that, if there has been a 911 call, then there is obviously a problem in the relationship. The two people are fighting to the point that someone has called the police. So, it is important that the counseling focus on their relationship issues or anger management issues, as well.

If the accused seeks counseling before his court appearance, he has the opportunity to tell the Crown that he is already in an anger management program and is trying to learn how to deal with things differently. This can work favourably for the client to show that he is trying to make a new start and to learn not to make the same mistakes again.
