What To Do When You Are Involved In A Car Accident

The first thing people need to do is phone ICBC dial-a-claim and make sure that the claim is reported.

If they were drivers in an automobile accident, they have the duty to report the details of the accident to ICBC, presuming ICBC is their insurance company. But they have a duty to report the details of the accident to their own insurance company because they are involved in it. Everybody may know whose fault it is but the insurance company doesn’t until it gets details from the driver.

It is also very important, of course, to make sure that you take down all the details as to the parties involved and to make sure you get the names of any witnesses that may be involved. You can’t presume that just because you know the other person was at fault that that’s necessarily going to be easy to prove later, so it’s very important to get the names of witnesses even in a straightforward accident.

The other thing it is important to do is to seek medical attention as soon as possible. What kind of attention you will seek will depend upon the nature and severity of your injuries. You may just want to go to your family doctor the next day; but it is important that you do seek medical attention as soon as possible.

If the injured person is a passenger, or a pedestrian, or a cyclist, they do not have to go to ICBC or to the other driver’s insurance company at all. They do not have to speak to an adjustor. Everything can be handled with a lawyer. They can just get on with starting to feel better and getting themselves healed and the rest of it is up to the lawyer.

Whether driver or not, if you are injured in an automobile accident, the point of seeing the lawyer is that it frees you to concentrate on healing and getting yourself back to work. Let the lawyers worry about the insurance company.
